Calm Your Nervous System: 4-7-8 Breathing

Anxiety lives in the body as much as the mind. This simple breath pattern β€” used by clinicians and yogis alike β€” activates your parasympathetic nervous system, the body's natural "calm down" response. Try it for 4 rounds.

1

Sit comfortably and exhale fully

Let all the air out through your mouth. Relax your shoulders and jaw.

2

Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds

Slow and steady. Feel your belly expand, not just your chest.

3

Hold gently for 7 seconds

Soft hold β€” no strain. If 7 feels too long, hold for 4 and build up over time.

4

Exhale slowly through your mouth for 8 seconds

Purse your lips slightly. Let the exhale be longer than the inhale.

5

Repeat for 4 rounds, then rest

Notice the shift β€” even a small one. Then ask: "What's one small thing I can do next?"
